New Green council shows its true colours

Lords and ladies of the manor – that’s who they think of themselves. As much was apparent yesterday, when a newly elected Green councillor in Hastings tried to stop our outreach on the seafront.

We do a monthly two-hour session at Warrior Square, with yellow boards along the railings beside the Queen Victoria statue, and distributing copies of The Light to the general public. The paper is popular: 435 were given out yesterday (a new high for Hastings), while the messages on the boards draw frequent toots from passing motorists.

One of our members, who was offering people The Light, was approached by a woman who identified herself as a Hastings councillor. She showed her badge.

Who are you? Where are you from?

‘Just up the road’, our member replied. It seemed that this councillor, one of many elected on a Green landslide over Labour in the recent local authority elections, did not believe that anyone in Hastings would have such contrary views. This councillor (pictured below) knew of The Light paper, and was clearly concerned that it was being read by constituents. But she was particularly irked by our impressive display of about forty yellow boards.

You need permission to put those boards on the fence. You have no right to do this.

Our member stated that we don’t need permission, and that we always leave the fence as it was, with no damage or litter. But this councillor, who described herself as an artist in her election campaign, was not really bothered about the condition of the railings. She didn’t like the content.

This is all misinformation.

Our member asked what the councillor believed to be untrue, and she didn’t specify. She then took photographs of the line of boards. ‘Anything extreme, anything racist?’, our member asked. The councillor assured him that the matter wil be raised in council chambers this week. Golly!

Your move, Green council. Whereas the Labour Party let us be, the new rulers are less tolerant. Net Zero is an article faith to them, rather than just something demanded by the agenda. But will the new lords and ladies exert their authoritarian muscles on a few retired citizens with legitimate concerns about tyranny? I can see a pragmatist Green council leader urging restraint. But ideology has a tendency to make its adherents mad.
